Many of Tom’s photo series deal with people in their everyday living and working environment. But the people itself are not always shown in the pictures. Instead the stories are often told indirectly – by showing residential streets with their houses and commercial buildings and by the traces that are left behind consciously and unconsciously. The ordinary of each environment that is often seen but not really noticed is the centre of the pictures.

Many of Tom’s photographs are taken in urban areas in various places around the world. It is the human goings-on in cities with their heterogeneous living structures and the interaction of people of different social positions in a relatively confined area that inspires West most.

His pictures are not meant to criticize. They are meant to inspire the viewer to consciously discover everyday situations and places and view them from a different perspective.
